It takes a lot to make the Consumer Reports Top Picks list and here are the three areas they were judged on: test performance, reliability, and safety.
Test Performance
Top Picks had to rank at or near the top of their class in the overall test score
Reliability
Top Picks had to have an average or better reliability rating. This was based on the problems Consumer Reports subscribers reported on over a million vehicles in their latest Annual Auto Survey conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center.
Safety
Top Picks had to perform adequately if included in crash or rollover tests conducted by the government or insurance industry.
Judges then gave each model an overall
score which included a road-test score, predicted-reliability rating, as well
as taking into account the overall fuel economy. After all of this research, the 2014
