A couple of months ago at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), BMW showcased its vision for the future of the connected automobile. It referred to it as “The Internet of Things.” Designers and engineers at BMW projected a forward-thinking vision of the future where a car owner’s smartphone, smart appliances, smart home, and smart BMW model could all be connected and communicate with each other. This idea of the future is a lot closer than one might think! Keep reading to find out more!
The BMW brand has a vision of a connected future where you can wake up in the morning, take a look at your mirror, and see all of the necessary information that you need in order to tackle your day. Information such as your schedule, traffic and weather details, the charge level of you BMW i3, and how juiced up your smartphone is would all be displayed. It goes even a step further by imagining that your vehicle will automatically start once you remove your keys and phone from their designated resting place, once you perform a task such as turning on your coffee machine it’ll cause your vehicle to drive itself out of your garage with the appropriate route to your first appointment of the day programmed into your navigation system, and so on and so forth. The BMW brand’s connected vision that involves an entirely connected world is not here yet, but many industry experts believe it could be here sooner versus later. Stefan Butz, locations based service manager, BMW, had this to say about the vision: “The idea is to enable a connected experience in the car, in your home or on your mobile phone,” further claiming that “It will be a seamless experience across all of these.”
