There are a lot of things drivers can do to put themselves in danger. Driving around with your check engine light on is one dangerous thing a driver can do, as is ignoring warning signs like weird sounds or smells.
However, sometimes hazards aren’t so obvious. For instance, if your tires don’t have the proper pressure – especially if they are overinflated – you run the risk of experiencing a blowout on the road. Plus, over- or under-inflated tires negatively affect gas mileage. That's why it pays to check your tire pressure on a regular basis, and our BMW service experts have made it easy with this tire pressure checklist.
1. Let Your Tires Cool Down
If you just took your car for a ride, you’ll need to wait a little bit before checking the pressure. This is because the friction from the road naturally causes tire pressure to increase.
2. Find a Gauge
There are many different types of tire pressure gauges, with the most basic resembling a pencil or stick. If you plan to make tire pressure checks a regular task, you may want to invest in a digital gauge, as its readings will be more precise.
3. Put the Gauge On
The final step is to unscrew the valve cap on your tire and firmly affix the gauge onto the stem. You’ll know it’s fastened on securely when the hissing sound stops.
If you’re using the basic gauge, the stick on the end will pop up, giving you a psi estimate. With the digital gauge, a number will appear. Then, you can figure out if the pressure is where it should be. If you’re not sure what the right number is for your car, check your driver’s side door jamb.
