The World Car Awards have been presented each year at the New York International Auto Show since 2005, and are considered to be the most important international automotive award. The jury who awards the selections consists of 75 journalists from more than 20 countries. Each summer before the awards, the nominations from each of the different categories (World Car Design of the Year, World Green Car, World Car of the Year, World Luxury Car, and World Performance Car) are announced and from these nominations, with the jury eventually selecting three finalists. The 2015 BMW i8 was nominated in the World Green Car and World Luxury Car categories, earning a win for the World Green Car. Dr. Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing BMW, had this to say when accepting the award at the ceremony in New York:
"I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of the team in Munich. The BMW i8 represents the future with its unique lightweight construction and unrivalled connectivity. To win this award for the second year in row shows that our BMW I products are truly leading the world."
