The four-door 2015 BMW 5 Series is available in sedan and Gran Turismo (hatchback) body styles. It is available in six different models: 528i, 535i, 535d, 550i, M5, and ActiveHybrid 5. The base 528i comes powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 240 horsepower. The 535i features a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower, while the 535d comes powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel that generates 255 horsepower. The ActiveHybrid 5 gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder that pairs to an electric motor that combine to generate 335 horsepower. The top-of-the-line 550i gets a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that gets 445 horsepower. All engines come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The EPA estimates that the 528i will average 23/34 mpg, city and highway, which is excellent for its class, while the 535i will get 20/31 mpg and the 535d will average 26/38 mpg, city and highway. The ActiveHybrid 5 should average around 23/30 mpg, city and highway. The 2015 BMW M5 is a performance-oriented sedan that comes powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that generates 560 horsepower and 500 pound-foot of torque. It comes paired to a seven-speed automated manual transmission while a six-speed manual is available. In industry testing, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph. All models come standard with a stop-start system, which helps save gas by shutting off the engine while the car is idling.

In testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it received a perfect 5-Star Overall Rating as well as perfect five-star ratings in side crash and rollover crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated it with the top score of Good in its moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side impact, and roof strength tests.
